Nativist or Accommodation?

The U.S. has never been a truly moral country, even though we talk as if we are above moral reproach. The biggest lies we tell are to ourselves, which keeps us from facing our morality. The lies are not necessary because that is who we are.  All countries do bad things, all countries do good things.  Mostly bad things are done for nativist purposes, to create an illusion of morality, and what good things are done come about to accommodate all the majority.

The U.S. is a great country because of our promise.  The promise of liberty and justice for the average person resonates across the world.  The U.S. set up a system to bring that about.  We have not always lived up to our promise, but we continually work toward making that promise come true.

It is the tension between the belief in our morality and our actions that brings about the great changes that have occurred.  As we draw more people who are different into our promise the tension increases until change occurs.  Throughout our history the change has usually been advantageous for everyone. However, sometimes the change is a war, ostensibly to protect ourselves.

The problem from the tension is that nativist want to impede progress in order to keep their world intact while progress is causing change to occur.  With a population as large as the that of the U.S. , it is imperative to find common ground and be willing to compromise.

Time Travel

 

Neuroscientists Say

Our memories are never accurate because we create our lives from overly plentiful data that must be filtered by our brain as it decides what we saw or felt or tasted, even memories of those we love are closer to creative non fiction
than truth.  It makes me wonder
how in the hell humanity has progressed
at all.

We tend to think that time is moving forward, but is it really?  The true time machine is the human mind which allows us to encounter any time period in human history we can discover.  Because there is so much incoming information the human brain allows us to see what it expects us to see.  So if  your neurons have been habituated during walks in the woods, when you walk in the woods your brain determines what you see based on what you have seen.

Which leads me back to time travel.  If you immerse yourself in the 1890s, according to brain studies, I would think you should expect to see the 1890s. What do you think?

Compromise and Death

This essay has been written for an upcoming issue of Distracted Masses Magazine
 and will be published soon.

Plato presented the dilemma of the absolutism/relativism dyad in his dialogue Crito, a conversation about justice and injustice between Socrates and the wealthy Crito.   Socrates is encouraged to escape his execution but, his belief in upholding the law would not allow him to do so.  Socrates holds the absolutist position that he will uphold his principles even if it means he will die.  This situation is being played out today in American politics where shutting down the government to make a deeply held political belief has become an acceptable tactic.  The dialogue develops many of the arguments between the philosophies of absolutism and relativism.  Philosophical absolutism is the view that there is an absolute reality which exists independently of human knowledge. Philosophical relativism, on the other hand, advocates the idea that reality exists only within human knowledge, and that reality is relative to each individual. 

Absolutism has historically been the dominant paradigm in most world cultures driving politics and driven by belief.  The shamans, touched by the supernatural preceded emperor, pharaoh, and king anointed by their gods to lead with divine guidance.  If god says it is so there can be no arguments about what should be done.  Unless, of course, you don't believe in that god or any god.  Then that decree becomes relative to the beliefs of others.  Crito, the relativist, believed the law was too harsh and was willing to help Socrates thwart the decree that he die.  Socrates, the absolutist, believed that the laws of Athens must be upheld at any cost.  

Throughout time history has admired men and women of principle and told their stories as morality tales. In his book, After Virtue, Alasdair Chalmers MacIntyre known for his contribution to moral and political philosophy believes that moral views of cultures are typically about how it is best for human beings in general to live, and not just members of that culture. Relativism rejects universal truths where truth is transitory believing that moral values should be viewed in context of the environment of the individual and the cultural norms of their society.  Promoting one moral truth as superior to all others causes cultural and individual conflicts leading to the violence of suicide bombers and abortion providers murders by zealots for their convictions as well as, wars between cultures.

The willingness to die for a just cause has long been viewed a virtuous trait but survivors of wars for a just cause often reassess those beliefs.  In an article for the Atlantic Magazine, Allen Guelz viewed the civll war through the lens of absolution/relativism and concluded that the violence of the civil war caused the popularity of religious absolutism in the United States to decline.  Post-war a large number of men reflected on their part of a struggle rooted in absolutism and began to understand that giving ideas like abolition and freedom the status of truth destroyed a generation.  The same dynamic is at play in the middle east and other parts of the world where opposing ideologies, Sunni and Shite or Kurd vs Turk, declare the  truth for everybody, destroying the lives of millions of people with war and intolerance.

“The truth” is under assault by forces that began centuries ago and by current trends in the research of inner and outer space. Although absolutism has been the glue of many societies, the growth of relativism has been inevitable since scientists such as Galileo and Copernicus ventured beyond “the truth” and began investigating both inner and outer space.  Perhaps the Age of Absolutism and the excesses of it’s monarchs had the same effect on people of that time as the Civil War did in the United States. The Enlightenment and science driven Age of Reason followed the monarchs absolute rule.  Western religion went through a period of crisis but, the protestant revolution loosened the grip of the church on curious minds that questioned the way things were.  Relativism seems to thrive on curiosity and change.  The technology we use today would have been magic to most of the earth’s past inhabitants and a testament to scientific method and reason.  

Reality is being redefined by studies that reflect a relativist point of view.  This has brought about a deconstruction of universality and a closer focus on the individual’s role in creating their own reality.  At the most basic level, the world is constructed by a person’s brain. Making sense of the world and its happenings is nothing more than our individual brains’ interpretation of the signals it receives as we interact with our environments.  Because a being receives so many signals the brain actually predicts and creates much of what is sensed. Quantum mechanics suggests that we perceive at most a tiny sliver of reality and Swiss linguist, Ferdinand Saussure believed that language constitutes our world where meaning is always attributed to the object by the mind and constructed by and expressed through language. These findings seem to refute an absolutist view of the world where absolute reality exists independently of human knowledge..


Richard Wright, in his book The Evolution of God, proposes that history demonstrates that once a culture has been defeated by a rival they begin compromising until their religions merge and they believe in the same God.  This indicates that the absolute truth, which brought about war between different viewpoints, is compromised once there is a winner and a loser.  This also points out that the dyad is not a polar system but, rather a spectrum upon which individuals and cultures fall in different places. Perhaps we are shifting our culture to a point where relativism plays a more important role in providing a viewpoint that can keep us from killing each other before we find a compromise.

Remembering and Forgetting

Revelations concerning  the self deceit of  celebrities and politicians was not a surprise.  Upon leaving Vietnam it became apparent to me that some of the stories told by others on the trip home began to give the teller more credit than he claimed the first time the story was told in the barracks.  My wife has spent her entire life helping me to keep my stories in check, but then we began to realize that not all of her memories were accurate.  

We are brain hobbyists who attend Learning and the Brain Conferences on a regular basis to keep up to date with the latest neuroscience research about learning and memory.  As former teachers we were always interested in brain growth and development to help us understand how to better present lessons to our students so they would remember what they had been taught.  Despite being mindful of trying to teach for recall, former students I have met over the year seldom remember what course I taught, much less specific detail.  Some of that may be explained by the fact that I taught history.  I can not tell you how often, upon learning I was a history teacher, adults tell me how much they disliked history classes but now that they are older they love reading about the past.  

That is an important aspect of learning, you must first be interested if you are to remember.  Although that seems obvious, but to understand why that is true one must know that learning and memory are two parts of a whole process.  Neuroscientists who investigate these things say that memory is dependent upon more than electrical interactions between sodium and calcium, it is emotional and personal driven by both nature and nurture.  Neuroscientist are exploring the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains to help them understand how brains remember. Their discoveries provide a wide variety of methods for teachers to enhance student learning, but more importantly these methods can help a person to live a healthier life by developing strategies to strengthen their brain's learning/remembering systems.

The first step to understanding memory is to know how brain cells or neurons transmit information.  Neurons are composed of dendrites and a cell body (the soma) where information can be received and a tube shaped axon which connects to the dendrites of another neuron.  Communication takes place within the neuron and between neurons.  The communication within the neuron is electrical and between neurons chemical.

A sensory stimulus (ouch) sends an electrical impulse to a neuron and that signal travels quickly along the axon of that cell until it reaches the synaptic gap, a tiny opening between cells.  This is where the electrical potential triggers a chemical reaction that releasing hormones that cross the gap to the adjoining cell’s feathery dendrites.  Thus beginning a process that can form thousands of links with other neurons giving a typical brain well over 100 trillion synapses. 

The movement continues until the stimulus has created a neural network categorized by function that was created by the stimulus and neurotransmitters.  This network is a pathway that shares itself with the hippocampus where the axons in the neural network are strengthened through the process of myelin ( white matter or glial cells)  building up on the axon.  If the axons do not get strengthened appropriately the network fades away from the brain. 

Learning is the act of making and strengthening the neurons forming the network and memory is the ability to reconstruct or reactivate the previously made networks.  It is important to remember that networks that fire together wire together.  When another similar stimulus (ouch) is received the old networks light up saying hey there is more about that over here.  And that in turn mylenates the axons.

So what can we do to strengthen our memories to remember what we have done or even who we are?  John Medina, a neuroscientist from Harvard, advocates first of all a healthy brain.  The brain is one of the most amazing organs in the human body. It controls our central nervous system, keeping us walking, talking, breathing and thinking. The brain is also incredibly complex, comprising around 100 billion neurons which are each connected to a thousand more.  Thinking and remembering occur because of the integrated action of these neurons.  Every thought and action is controlled by the brain. The brain uses more energy than any other human organ, accounting for up to 20 percent of the body's total use. There are over one hundred thousand miles of vessels and capillaries intertwined with the brain to supply the oxygen needed to fire neurons, for cell maintenance and to produce the proteins needed for synaptic transfer.  

All of this convinces me that John Medina is right.  He recommends a healthy diet, exercise, adequate sleep and stress reduction as some of the ways to maintain a brain that will remember, even in old age.  This is a life long process and commitment that each person has to decide to make in order to live a full and healthy life.

My father contracted congestive heart failure  when he was in his late 80s.  The lack of blood flow caused his brain to change.  He lost his immediate memory and was unable to create new memories.  He was able to recall many events and details from his early life, childhood and his young adult life.  He remembered chemistry, his major in college and some family events if he was primed.  He could, however, talk in detail about his experiences in WWII as a bomber pilot and he could remember some things about his career as an Air Force officer.  But, he couldn’t recall what we had just discussed minutes before.  It pointed out to me the importance of a healthy brain.  You have to keep the blood flowing and insure your body can produce the elements needed to keep your nervous system and brain firing. 

If you don’t sleep well your brain can not consolidate the neurons into networks to give you plenty of points of recall for the things you have recently learned.  It is obvious that exercise causes the blood to flow and carry oxygen to the brain.  A healthy diet impacts your total health, obesity, for instance, causes changes in the brain that impair memory.  Stress is the most toxic of memory disrupters.  It releases cortisol, a chemical that inhibits the information processing system.  The impact of not following a lifestyle to have a healthy brain and body may take a while to impact a person, but eventually your memory will exhibit symptoms of poor care and maintenance if you don’t.

The doctor who examined my dad after he had experienced rapid deterioration of his memory did not believe Dad had a stroke, although many of the symptoms were similar.  They weren’t sure what caused it, but in retrospect he was probably already experiencing symptoms of low blood pressure and his brain lacked the blood flow necessary to provide energy his brain needed to work at full capacity. 

Dad had always been really smart, Mensa type of smart.  He had been a pilot, a nuclear chemist, and an officer in the Air Force among other attainments.  The loss of his memory was hard for me as I recalled what a witty and humorous man he had been and now he read the same story in the newspaper all day long.  I could sort of prime Dad’s memory and get him talking about many things from the past and event recent family or world events.  His memory pretty much stopped at about the time he had the rapid deterioration. 

He hated exercise, it was kind of a joke in the family.  He was physically strong but his cardiovascular system was weak.  He had smoked when younger, his primary diet for many years centered on foods that are not heart healthy, he had high blood pressure most of his life (stress), and he had sleep apnea for quite a while.  So the amazing fact was that he lived to 93, about five years with impeded memory and immobility.  

But what he could remember is a testament to memory being personal and emotional.  If you want to remember something find a way to make it yours and feel strongly about it.  Dad’s most vivid memories were from WWII.  He could remember missions, people, places, procedures and policies.  He could remember Mom and many things about our family as we moved to where the Air Force sent us.  It was astounding the things he could pull out of his mind. 

He could also remember things he had learned in school.  Especially those subjects he had been curious about and where he studied and prepared for exams.  At the last Learning and Brain conference in San Francisco which we attended this year these two techniques had undergone scrutiny by neuroscientists who reported students remembered best if they were tested repeatedly.  Not high stakes testing, but repetition of the information.  Quizzing yourself would work.  My dad could remember quite a bit about chemistry a subject he loved and one he had been tested on throughout his studies and then in the field.  

Current research adds some useful information to the concept of repetition.  It demonstrates that it is best to pause between those tests or  repetitions.  Our brains need time to consolidate information in order to build strong networks of neurons.  Everyone has experienced that aha moment when you have taken a break from a difficult task and suddenly the answer is upon you.  That is a reason sleep is so important, it is during deep sleep that your brain consolidates previous information.  If stimulus events do not get put into networks they fade and eventually are forgotten.  Even information you work hard to remember can fade over time.  That is why my former students have difficulty remembering my class, they did not keep firing the networks I tried to help them develop.

Nothing works to build strong memories if you do not pay attention.  You have to attend to the information you are trying to learn.  There are a number of ways to enhance attention through the use of media, peer teaching and hands on learning.  The value of those methodologies can be negated, however, if the student has a mindset that puts them in opposition to learning or attention can be diminished by multitasking.  Using electronics, passing notes, day dreaming and an over stimulative environment can keep information from ever reaching the hippocampus.  You might think you can do more than one thing at a time, but it is unusual to do all of these things well.  It is better to complete one task before tackling another if you want to be able to remember what you have done.  

Even if you are healthy there are many impediments of strong recall.  Evolutionary biologist, Robert Trivers from Rutgers University believes that self deception, an evolutionary adaptation, distorts what we remember.
“Our sensory systems are organized to give us a detailed and accurate view of reality,” he says, “but once this information arrives in our brains, it is often distorted and biased to our conscious minds.” We repress painful memories, create false ones, rationalize immoral behavior and jack up our self-esteem. We deny ourselves the truth.”

We are influenced by, as Robert Sapolsky, evolutionary biologist from Stanford, posits a range of nature nurture events.  These events shape who we are and contribute to our mindset and begin with evolutionary impacts from prehistory right up to what we are doing when a stimulus is introduced into our sensory system.  What we remember is truly a matter of our genetic makeup, the environment in which we have been raised, and our surroundings at the moment of input.  

Since there is no way that the brain can pay conscious attention to all sensory data that constantly bombard the body, it filters out that which is not relevant.  That means that, according to Pat Wolfe, a brain educator, approximately 99% of all information entering through senses is immediately dropped.  That is probably why so many eye witnesses differ with other eye witnesses when describing what happened to whom.

Add to that the idea that every time you remember an event you actually remember the last time you remembered it event.  It is a little like the gossip game where nobody can keep a story straight.   That is what happens to all of us.  That is why Brian Williams and Bill O’Reilly are defending their integrity, it is a human thing.  Just like the young marine I recall returning from Vietnam at the same time I did.  In the barracks in Danang his stories were creditable.  In Okinawa he had become a central character in his stories, by the time we reached the states he was a hero.  I think we do this inadvertently to put ourselves at the center of our stories.  

There is a way to ensure you will remember.  You could use technology to record your life.  Maybe there is a government  agency that can help you.  If you don’t want to do that you will have to live a fully human life coping with your brain’s strengths and weaknesses while trying to stay healthy.

Thinking about my retirement

I have been engaged in remodeling a foreclosed house for the past month.  It has truly cut into my retirement, which is what I wanted, I thought.  But, all of this activity, meeting deadlines and working with subcontractors has created tensions in my life that were not there before I started this endeavor.  I was thinking that tensions would be good and invigorate me beyond my lazy days.  What this has taught me is that I am old enough to have lazy days.

Unreal expectations

I stopped writing this blog because I was going to university and wanted to concentrate on my studies.  Now it is time to share some of that information.  The purpose of the blog will change a bit as I will no longer only concentrate on education issues, but will broaden my scope into other issues that I find interesting.

I would like to start by sharing my thoughts about getting a second bachelor's degree in my social security years.  That has, so far,  been a highlight of my retirement and given me much to think about.  One of my thoughts was that college really was not much different than it was when I went in the 60s and 70s.  Certainly American culture has changed and students today have fingertip access to information that would have taken me weeks to find back then.  Still, there were students interested in learning what the professors had to say, some who were primarily working for the credential to improve their lives and some who were in as much a daze as I was at 18 years old.  I don't think that has changed.

One of the complaints about young people today is that they can not read nor write as well as their parents generation.  I question that assessment.  It seems that kids are reading all the time, it just that reading is different with all of the technology.  I have always know people who preferred movies to books, particularly in the fiction genre. I would also say that a student today has probably written far more than I did at that age if they post on social media or text.  Is there quality in what they write, I am not sure how important that is for everybody.  I certainly encountered students at the university in the last three years that could write much better than I ever did.  I will say that this time around I was an English major and almost all of the people in my classes liked to read and write.

Being a grandfather of an almost college aged student put me about one generation away from my fellow students' parents.  That was the generation I taught as a public/private school teacher/librarian.  That was a generation that was also constantly harassed by certain segments of society as not profiting from their public education.  I have never been sure if all of the comparisons are with my generation or my parents' but it seemed to me then as it does now that some liked to learn and some couldn't stand it.  I think that has always been true.   There is a factor which gets overlooked in comparing generations of students in America.  Today we teach everyone and expect them to succeed.  The diversity of the students today was a larger spectrum than when I began school.  That means there are going to be more on the low end but I believe there are also more on the high end of skills and motivation.

I believe that motivation is the key for all learners.  At 18 years of age many people do not yet know what motivates them.   College for many is a test to find that out.  It took me three attempts at college before I was really ready to learn.  Our high schools do not allow students to spend much time discovering what motivates them.  This is nothing new, Dewey proposed this idea in his teachings, demonstrating the links between interest, curiosity and effort.  Perhaps I can best illustrate this with a story about my last education job.

I spent the 2005-2006 school year working in a rural district that basically was one elementary, one middle, one high and one alternative school.  I was the librarian for the district and spent most of my time working with grades 3-6.  The teachers supported a very robust Accelerated Reader program for these students and everyday they would come to the library to choose books to read for the program.  They read and read and read.  They seemed to have a strong interest in reading and I thought they truly enjoyed reading.  These students passed the standardized testing and had high reading scores.

This seemed a success story until I began comparing the amount of reading done at the elementary school with the middle and high schools.  The number of books read per student declined each year.  By 12th grade almost nobody checked out a book from the library to read unless they had to for a class, although as everywhere there was a small cadre of those who loved to read.  Further observation and discussions with students led me to the conclusion that most of them did not like to read.  In addition the middle and high schools were not passing the standardized testing of the time.

I realize there were many other factors involved that I did not consider, but it was undeniable that most of our high school students only read a book if they had to.  It is my belief that we took the joy out of reading.  Is that different from my time at that grade?   Certainly many adults love to read the stories in books and many students dropped out of school along the way.  But we have created a system of schools where the Chancellor of Washington DC schools is allocating 5 million dollars to make sure that those students like school.

It is all about motivation.  If you make someone do something, they will turn against it.  I .  Each individual is different.  But, if we expect to have students with high skills they need to be motivated to gain those skills and punishing them with education will not bring that about.
